Living the American Dream

Living in America can be a 24 hour workout.  It is not uncommon to live a fast-paced hectic lifestyle, sprinting from one place to the next without boredom time.

 

If you're reading this, you most likely have a desire to visit or move to the USA.  We give you the facts before you pack your bags to experience an adventure.

 

 

If you thrive on competition, you will adapt just fine. America is a culture of many different opinions, in a competive landscape of winning, working hard and playing hard.

Patriotism is a big deal. At main events, when the national anthem is played, stand up, face the flag, put your hand on your heart, and if you know the words, sing along!

You can drive with a foreign drivers license in the United States for up to 3 months.  Drink driving will get you handcuffed, jailed and a visit to DUI (driving under the influence) Court.

Understanding American mannerisms and etiquette goes beyond body language.  It's common for men and women to make eye contact and shake hands.

Get ready to push yourself out the door and rebuild your social life to avoid being stuck in your comfort zone of loneliness.

The dilemma of dressing for the occasion when not all occasions are created equal and there is no dress code to follow. Find your personal style, wear what you like.

Do you want to sound like an American?  There is no need to Americanise your accent in this multi-cultural country.  Your words just need to be clear and pronounced.

 

You can learn English on-the-go and at your pace on your mobile.  Personally, I recommend Mondly.  It's a fun and easy language app that I'm currently using to learn French.

American slang words are popular all over the world.  Words will take on a new meaning, depending on when and how they are used in a conversation.  Be careful with using slang words.

 

Multi-cultural areas will generally have international foods stores, and the larger grocery chains usually carry a wide selection of foreign food products.

 

Most Americans believe and practice in the "right to bear arms", and in some states no permit or training is required.  Don't get into arguments with people!

To stay safe and carefree, use a dose of common sense to avoid icky situations.  "There's nothing safer than flying, it's crashing that's dangerous".

Activate your indicator or emergency light to let the officer know that you see him/her. Find a safe place to pull over and stay in your car - do not get out. Roll down your window and wait for instructions from the police.

Do not hitch a ride or hitchhike, you may get taken, robbed or kidnapped.  Do not pick up hitchhikers, you may get taken, robbed or kidnapped.  It is not the culture to hitchhike in the USA.

Most states have some form of smoking ban in restaurants, bars, city parks, beaches, colleges and campuses.  If you must smoke in a private setting, ask for consent or step outside.
